When Hamonic’s trade request first broke out it surprised many people, including myself. Per the Isles themselves: it certainly surprised his teammates. Those I spoke to felt that it might take as long as the NHL trade deadline to move him. However, one day later, that tune changed. Evidently the publicizing of the Hamonic shopping has created a bit of an auction-like atmosphere for his services with the other teams.
A deal could be struck this week or even next week.
Three items have made him a key target for some teams…
- Some teams are enamored with his physical play, besides character.
- His contract, which is an amazing bargain for someone who is a 2nd pairing dman in a league where prices have spun out of control.
- Some teams who are lodged with some problems already this season are looking for a player just like him.
Meanwhile, some teams seem to be out, if we believe the reports. Example: Per them Edmonton Oilers seem unwilling to include Darnell Nurse or Oscar Klefbom. This makes sense IF Edmonton feels Nurse is a top pair projecting player and Klefbom a 2nd pair player. Why bother to deal for Hamonic, who despite the hype, is a solid 2nd pair player?
As I cited on twitter, I could not see the Isles having any interest in those from Vancouver and Minnesota. Reports since seem to say the same thing. From the lack of any mention, one would think that St. Louis seems unwilling to deal their key pieces, like Kevin Shattenkirk. He has been on fire for the Blues.
Reports of other teams being rebuffed include the LA Kings, per Damien Cox.
So, who are we left with?
If we start to whittle it down, we get Winnipeg, Calgary, and Colorado based on the different rumors, reports and based on our original list from our previous blog.
So who is left from my list?
Could it be Jacob Trouba of Winnipeg? Dougie Hamilton of Calgary? Colorado, a darkhorse in this race, has the well-regarded Tyson Barrie. Colorado also had had rumors of looking to deal Matt Duchene. This, of course, makes us wonder if the Hamonic deal could be expanded to also grab him plus Barrie. However, I have a sneaking suspicion, with Duchene’s play of late, that he might not really be for sale.
There have been reports that Anaheim has made offers … as if been working on Hamonic for a long time. Except for one thing … per a source: Ducks haven’t called the Isles. Odd to hear conflicting things there. So not sure Ducks truly a player here. Especially when I don’t see anyone quite fitting the Isles analytical criteria. I am quite confused on how Anaheim suddenly appeared in the middle of all this.
In any case, the list gets smaller, and things seem to be heating up. Can Garth Snow bring home a Holiday Gift early?
