There will be an ongoing theme of concerns across the blogosphere as writers astutely pinpoint problems for many teams at the cap ceiling. With the cap no longer going upward, the expanding waistlines of cap ceiling teams will now have problems. If not now…. soon.
Bailey Debate Fodder
As I shared on twitter over the weekend to much Josh Bailey debate…. here is TSN Scott Cullen’s excellent piece on Expected Value (statistically speaking) of NHL draft picks. So in lieu of this, at pick #9 plus the fact that moving back got the team the pick they selected Travis Hamonic with… not bad. Especially when we recall that fans all wanted Nikita Filatov (washed-out and in KHL) and Luke Schenn (so-called next Chris Pronger).
Speaking of Josh Bailey… when you look at all NHL forwards who played 500 minutes or more 5 on 5… who is #32 in Points/60? That’s how prolific he was in 5 on 5…. and why for most of the season he played LW. In fact, in points derived in 5 on 5 play he was tied for 43rd in the NHL with 36pts with the likes of Tyle Toffoli, Daniel Sedin, and Alex Ovechkin.
|44||TOFFOLI, TYLER||Los Angeles|
|46||KREIDER, CHRIS||NY Rangers|
|47||BAILEY, JOSH||NY Islanders|
|52||ST._LOUIS, MARTIN||NY Rangers|
|53||STEEN, ALEXANDER||St. Louis|
Is Bailey the LW of the future? Probably not. But as a placeholder who is only 25… he will serve fine until Michael Dal Colle and others all come up and earn the position in the next 1-2 years.
In other news…
Puck Daddy with the winners and losers of the NBC Sports NHL TV schedule. Pssst… the Isles have 5… up 3 games from last season.
